I was wondering about that I couldnt find anything in the regulations. It does say the dog needs to be up to date on the shots. But usually our vehicle gets searched going across.

Living in El Paso Tx across from Juarez I know people who take their dogs back and forth on a regular basis without problems
There even used to be a K9 Security Co here that kept some of their dogs in Juarez and shuttled them across daily.

My understanding is if you don't go any more than 30 miles into the interior you can get by with having proof of vaccinations, ownership and tags..

However there are actually regulations and rules for travel into Mexico, including a pet passport of sorts.. Given how the laws are interpreted, applied and changed often over there, if I was taking mine (which I have no intention of ever doing, hell I don't even cross over anymore) across even for a day trip I'd probably follow the more detailed regulations.

Link to a pet travel site that has the regulations and forms for travel into Mexico. http://www.pettravel.com/immigration/Mexico.cfm

An American driving over is just about guaranteed to get checked, going over with a dog ofcertain types or aggressive behavior doubles the chance.. Sometimes I think the Port officials just want to find a reason, any reason to make your stuff theirs.. Even when I used to walk over I took nothing with me except the documents needed to get back across.

Something else to consider is while driving over is relatively quick, you could find yourself stuck in a very long line for many hours trying to get back in the U.S. and you run the risk of going through yet another inspection courtesy of Customs..

We get pulled over for secondary inspections on this side of the border all the time and its mostly due the filas or other dogs on board. They think we're either hiding something or they just want a closer look at the mutts.. My roommate works for DOJ and she isn't immune to it.. My opinion it isn't worth the haslle or inconvenience.

Robert, The problem is you are trying to do things legally by the book. If you want less problems just head over, leave all your documents at home, pack you fila in a back bundle, find a hole in the "fence" and head back. You can avoid all the customs headaches and people even put food and water in the desert for you. You can even make a couple extra bucks if you bring a few folk back with you or some extra cargo. Obama just moved a bunch of troops from the southern border to the much more dangerous Canadian border, so the coast is clear.
