I am looking for a Fila with a mild temperament...nothing aggressive. I mentioned in another post that I've seen some Filas in training classes at a pet store and some of them were very friendly (others were not). There were no Filas for sale there, just owners who brought their dogs in for training classes. I like the breed because some of them are kind and safe. From what I've seen, some Filas have no temperament and others have a hard temperament. Are there breeders who breed specifically for a mild temperament, or do you just have to tell the breeder that you want a dog with a mild temperament and they can find one like that out of the litter? Barking is okay, but I don't want a dog who bites. I also like Filas because I read on the Internet that they are good around livestock and other animals, so I'm guessing that they should get along fine with other dogs, as well as cats.

candace this breed is not right for you... a fila with no temp or a "friendly fila" doesn't exist only back yard breeders breed that crap to make money...be careful this breed is full of money hungry puppy peddling thieves that will tell you anything to make a sale and stick you with the worst the breed has to offer...try a chesapeke bar retriever...pretty aloof with strangers, strong solid dog and it is the national dog of the USA! seriously breeding a mild fila or expecting one is wrong on many levels and should not be done.

Hi Brasileirokid, Thanks for the info. I was unaware that all Filas were supposed to have an aversion towards strangers...I thought that there were friendly ones too, but apparently, these are being produced by breeders who are not following the standard. I definitely would not want to buy a mild-tempered Fila and risk having a dog with an unstable temperament. I don't know if I could control a dog with a hard temperament, so that's why I was trying to find one with a mild temperament, but I guess that doesn't exist in a well-bred Fila. I will look into the Chesapeake Bay Retriever...sounds like that may be better suited for me.

Hey Candace, good choice. I personally would not mind having a chessy...great dogs and can be pretty protective. GoodLuck and let us know if we can help you with anything else.
