I just bought a little 8 week old Brazilian Mastiff. He doesn't have papers but I don't really mind that I am not going to breed him or show him. I am a little worried though. I bought him on the spur of moment sort of thing. I have been looking for a Mastiff for a long time and I was informed that they were gentle giants and did well in the apartment. Well I saw Mastiff and his cute little face and a reasonable price and well... here I am. I am 21 years old and live with my mom so he is never alone. I have another puppy, an english bulldog and they really like eachother. But I need some advice. After researching the breed shortly after purchase I noticed the difference between Fila and English I was under the misconception that all mastiff breeds were similar. I do live in an apartment so I just need some advice. He will be walked daily and there is a large court yard that I let my other puppy run in so there is room. We also frequent the dog park. I guess I just need some info on the breed from other people that actually have a fila. PLEASE help me. Any advice would be welcome

Start reading up everything you can, would be my advice. Consider obedience from the get go, in home and out and about. Feel free to contact me privately anytime you wish, just go to my profile and you can get the info from the web site.

It would have been best if the seller had given you heaps of information about the breed. May I ask who you bought from?

There are a number of Fila people up there that might be close. They are friends and I'm sure could give you great input.

Hey Lauren,

I am glad you came on the forums...1st off I want to tell you that a Fila Brasileiro ("Brazilian Mastiff") is the "anti english mastiff". These are not "gentle giants (if they have proper temperament), they dont like strangers and if give the chance will bite one...running in the court yard with your bulldog is out of the question (if he has proper temp). I dont think that an apartment is a good place for a fila. I am not trying to be a j/o at all these are things that the breeder should have asked you and told you about and should not have sold you a Fila because of the situation it would put you and the dog in. Now all that said, lol...maybe the dog wont have proper temp and would act like an english mastiff after all... goodluck and whatever you decision is with this dog we will do our best to help you out in every step of the way.
