Thread: Eggs

  1. Eggs

Cane likes a raw egg mixed in with his food which is half Blue Buffalo and half homemade, cooked topper(about 1/3 each meat, veggies and brown rice). Right now I only give him one with his morning feeding. Should I limit the amount of eggs he gets? If so what is the max he should get? Cane is about 140 pounds and is on the lean side.

    Thanks

One other thing, should I include the shell?

    Angelbears,

We throw the whole egg shell and all in when they get eggs. In their waste we'll see small flecks that aren't digested but the rest is. We alternate one meal a day with the additives: one day cottage cheese, one day an egg, one day yogurt. This is added to the raw mix of vegetables and proteins and additives of the BARF grind we perform. I think you may have seen the recipe and pictures.

Even with the poundage we feed, I can count the ribs for the most part on my kids. I can see most individual muscles. I think that they are healthy lean. My vet (who would prefer I not do a raw food died) says all my kids are VERY healthy. Even when we added two extra pounds a day, all we saw was more waste, no chubby bodies.

I can't give you scientific documentation that what we feed, the composite of their waste, their blood count, etc. will prove it is better than what any item on the market would produce. The waste product alone tells us that what goes in is either used or not.

When we do have to go to kibble because of schedules we do buy "DIAMOND LAMB MEAL AND RICE [LARGE BREED]", and still add the egg/cottage cheese/yogurt to one meal a day.

I don't know if this helps. I don't have any absolute proof about the benefits or not, but we haven't had any problems.

If Cane is lean, a consideration, maybe that means he will live a long full life unencumbered in his joints. He might just be a product of health.

I can see the ribs on my body. I only with the amount of flesh I had around my 'sit-upon' was less

  3. Dianna,

We are very happy and surprised that Cane is mean and lean. I'm shocked that he's not a fat butterball, he's very low energy and has fat mommies that love to share food off their very unhealthy plates. We have thought about doing raw but we really don't have the space at this time to commit to it. I'm going to add the egg shell back into Canes diet, it's just that the last time I gave him the whole egg, Debra got upset when she took him out to do his business and saw the white flecks in his poo....took me half the night to convince her that it wasn't worms. LOL

Unfortunately, Cane hates yogurt, unless it is from Baskin & Robbins I'm not sure their yogurt is all that beneficial

I'm just worried that he is getting too much cholesterol. Do dogs have to worry about cholesterol???

    Thanks

Eggs are great. Use the shell. My gut feeling tells me eggs everyday might raise cholesterol. Science is a wonderful thing. They tell us one thing that is supposed to be a scientific fact and a decade later oooops the science is wrong. Yogurt is great but read the label. Some yogurt is packed full of junk and others have just a few ingrediants. Greek style plain at Publix is the good stuff while the other plain yogurt is crap. A Tablespoon full is all you need to get the benefits. Another great thing with eggs. If you have a dog with upset tummy. Scrambled eggs and a bit of pumpkin pie filling, even a sprinkle of cheese. I have had good luck with eggs and I even give the whole egg to the dogs on occasion. It is entertaining to see them pick up the egg and gently crack it. If you have just one dog going raw is not so hard. Keep it simple, try a leg quarter or two for one meal a day. You will see how well Cane digests that leg quarter. Chicken backs are good to they have good bone and fat ratios. I pull out 10lbs of raw legs every day. Sometimes 20lbs depending on the other parts and pieces I am feeding. One 10lbs bag would last you a week. I get chicken for .47 cents per pound, yep I found a place to get it cheap. I think you will get a kick out of seeing and hearing Cane crunch up those leg quarters. The dogs love to crunch up those things. Eggs are great and I must chickens are very cool birds. If you never owned chickens then you just don't know. Chickens are cool birds.
