I was wondering the same thing. :-(

I know in the very early 90's they had a newsletter and such. That was before the internet was being used so much. Yes, there was life before the internet and people even survived without cell phones. Back then you had to actually remember people's phone numbers and you pulled over and used a pay phone. Some how we did manage to make fire and the cave was a bit drafty but....lol lol

Is there a difference between FCI and CAFIB registration? Can one dog be FCI and the other be CAFIB, and if so, how would the puppies be registered?
I am wondering because I spoke with someone who mentioned something about having both CAFIB and FCI dogs in their breeding program. I read up on both of these standards and noticed that the CAFIB standard is different than the FCI standard, so I was just wondering. I read something about CAFIB only breeding for fawn & brindle and FCI breeding for black, brindle, and fawn.

Candace,
As to the actual pedigree issued to a puppy, a registry will only recognize it's own. Example: AKC will not register a litter that has an AKC parent and an FCI parent, they would remain un-papered.
To have legitimate paperwork, the parent's must both be registered with the same organization.
As to the standard, reading them yourself will reveal any differences, just like you said.
There are some postings on this forum that go into detail the discussions of standard differences and preferences. Take a cruise through them and maybe that will give you a notion on that.
Are you researching buying a Fila? If so, good thing for you to do.

Fila puppy
Hello Dianna,
Yes, I am looking into buying a Fila puppy. I am trying to find a good breeder, and I think that it is important for me to be knowledgable about the breed and the standards so that I don't get inaccurate information from breeders who are simply trying to sell me a dog.
A while back I contacted a few breeders I found from ads in the newspaper and online, but the parents were not health tested, and I couldn't get a direct answer as to whether or not papers were available for the dogs.
How much should I expect to pay for a Fila?
I saw a couple of different ads for Filas about a year or so ago from backyard breeders, and the prices ranged from $800-$1,500 - - no papers - - no health testing.
I looked at the websites of a few of the larger Fila Breeders, but am not familiar with them. Do breeders generally offer a guarantee? If so, what is generally included?
Thanks!

Candace,
Glad you're reading up. The more you do the better prepared you'll be.
Expect to pay what you and the breeder can come to agreement on. That is a broad answer, but from my experience, that's what it boils down to.
With enough information under your belt you'll make the better decision.
If you're interested, cruise my site and have a look see. www.delalunakennel.com You might learn from my past bad experiences

Candace,
I will try to answer some of your questions... The thing with CAFIB is a little difficult to explain. Both CAFIB and CBKC are registries and both have there own written standard. I really doubt that anyone in the United States has a dog with a CAFIB pedigree as they are very difficult to obtain (many steps to be completed). now for the confusing part... you will hear people talking about "cafib and cbkc filas", when they say these things they are referring to the standard in which their dog falls under. when someone says they have a CAFIB fila it doesnt mean that their dog is registered with CAFIB only that it is bred and conforms to the CAFIB standard...ready for this? Almost all filas are registered with CBKC or other FCI registries like FCPR this includes CAFIB type filas. Soooo just because a dog may have a pedigree from CBKC or FCPR it does not mean that they necessarily fit under the CBKC standard, the dog may infact be a CAFIB type dog.
Now to help you with your questions about money, guarantees, etc. These dogs have some health issues which include hip and elbow dysplasia. IMO if you are paying for a dog it should come with a hip guarantee at the min. As far as price goes...you mentioned 500-1500.....if someone is selling a dog for 500 rest assure there is absolutely no health testing done and there will be no health guarantee as well as no papers..."Cheap is expensive" is an annoying term my in law keeps telling me but it is true, pay 500 now and your likely to spend thousands in vet bills later on. for 1500 you better be getting papers, health guarantee (min of 2 yrs for hips), known (easily researched) bloodlines and dogs.
If you want feel free to contact me and I will be more than willing to help you find a good dog from good bloodlines or at the very least explain how to find a good breeder. juanh76@hotmail.com

Juan,
"Cheap is expensive", man is that truth that could pass the 'walk on water' test!
What have you got about the expensive ones that are really cheap?
