Stupid question 1
Cane's head and muzzle is very soft and I just love petting him around those areas. The problem is the rest of his body. When we pet or play with him and we come into contact with his fur our skin gets red, bumpy and stings a little. Are all fila like this. Is there anything we can treat his coat with or feed him.
Thanks

I don't know about Cane but my Fila's are tree/plant lovers, anythime there is an oppurtunity to rub in trees or bushes they are rubbing their whole body through it. At first I thought it was my male leaving his scent places but my females do the same thing. I Mabye Cane has rubbed or rolled in something that your allergic to?

angelbears,
Do you feel any kind of bumps on his body under his fur? Bumps small enough you might not see but could feel? Does he have any flaky patches under his fur? Does he lick his body or scratch multiple times every day? When you smell his body up close, anything?

Some people react to their dogs fur type. Sharpei are notorious for giving rashes LOL. When a sharpei comes into the office usually whoever is restraining the dog ends up with a rash on their arms from it. It is kind of like fiberglass LOL.

Do you have poison ivy anywhere around your home or places you take him? Cane can't catch it but he can carry the oil on his coat.....
Just a thought : )

Thank you all for your replys.
Fiberglass is the perfect word for it. Poison ivy makes perfect sense, I'm pretty sure we have it in our fence line but I've never had a problem with it. I will have to try and watch Cane to see what he gets into. As far as his skin goes his body is in great shape no bumps, flaking or excessive itching EXCEPT he has terrible acne that we have dealt with since he was a puppy and in between his little toes will get red and swollen. Sometimes I think that becasue his fur is so coarse that when he grooms himself he agravates the acne under his chin. Of course the nasty little Blue Heeler we adopted hasn't helped things one bit. Her favorite thing is to grab on to his chin and go for a ride.

Yeah, I've dealt with the acne on one or another of my kids. My vet said other breeds with hanging skin experience the same, so I try not to worry.
The poison ivy would be nothing but dormant twig lines now but in spring, if it is there, maybe you could hit it with Round Up or some other product, just in case that is what Cane has on him.

angelbear...this is really odd but my wife and i have a similar reaction to filas..w/ me i get over it in a mth or 2 after the fila and i are around each other for a while, my wife took about a yr before the fur would stop giving her a rash but for some reason their saliva still gives her a small rash....i just thought it was a coincidence that it just so happened to be with only the filas that we have or have come in contact with but after you saying the same thing....interesting stuff.

What chocolatemoose said made a lot of sence but we have a little ACD that gets into everything that Cane does and then some and we have no problem breaking out with her. I think it could be the oil in his coat, combined with his coarse hair pricking the skin and letting the oil get underneath. Cane was really aloof until recently now he is wanting to be the typical lap fila and we were so excited(still are) but man it tears us up for about 10 minutes after he gets off of us. I feel sorry for your wife. If we broke out everytime we got gobbered by Cane we would stay broken out. LOL
