Korean Dosa....I have NEVER heard of that. Good God, the look of it if that is what it is! I'm going to have to Google that and see more. It looks like a Neo gone wrong!

Fellow posters, we aren't getting SNIPEE are we? It is entertaining to read the discussions, I like seeing the pictures and links, I'm getting lots of info to consider.

The other breeds that I have owned that had maximum and minimum sets in the standard, including color also had a longer list of predisposed genetic defects: heart, thyroid, eyes, hearing, dysplasia, brain, urinary, etc. I am glad that I haven't found wide spread genetic abnormalities with the Filas. Of course it has a lot to do with the testing and sharing we owners do. Hopefully we can keep it on the downside.

By the way, has anyone heard of a home product, or used one, that can test urine and fecal for any sort of issues. I always worry that I might miss something since one loss that went unknown by me. My vet is patient but am sure they think I'm a nut having my dogs tested often for UTI

No one is denying that there is a possibility of feral dogs or even hounds in the fila heritage or do you pretend to believe that the originators of this breed kept their dogs locked up and they never came into contact with any other dog? One thing we could agree with is that the influx of neo and em started fairly recently. You must remember that the mastiffs of old were working dogs not the akc crap that you see now, the bulldog was a working dog, not the crippled warrior that the akc calls a bulldog, the bloodhound is a decent size dog of about 110 lbs..now I have only seen about 2 CAFIB filas be that small, both females. my female is 130lbs...not small, I also have one at about 105lbs at 1 yr old, should be a nice lil bitch, super fast and athletic with nice bone. I dont know where you get your info from but just because someone post a piebald up doesnt mean that it fits the CAFIB standard. CAFIB allows more white than CBKC but not a white dog with a patch of brown...do you need me to post THE standard? My question and my point for posting the dogs that I did is; why would one suppose there is such a huge variance in shape, size, look within one standard and so much consistency in another. If you are going to tell me that it is because there were diff breeds in the make up of our breed then your logic is flawed as all the breeds have diff breeds in their makeup but now produce a consistent type (w/o consistency there is no breed, just a dog). For example go to Canil Itanhandu's site and look at their dogs...you can easily tell they are the same breed, same with santa luzia, amparo etc, notice that if you look at the different kennels and compare you will see that ALL their dogs are of the same breed regardless if you never even heard of a fila they are easily recognizable as a single breed....can that be said of all the CBKC kennels? I literally have pics of kennels whos dogs look to be EMs, one with Neos, one with (no joke) basset hounds and they are all champions and all are CBKC "Filas"....which one of those is the right one? none?, all? no one would be able to tell that all those dogs belong to the same breed. That is the point!
Now all that being said there are some CBKC dogs that I love the look of like thor of paragon, I even like the look of shoo its Gabriel (dont kill me, lol)...they are not what I would consider a fila but still some impressive looking dogs.

    hey de la luna,

I love dog breeds and do A LOT of research on them, ALL breeds. The korean dosa is a mess of an animal that was supposedly made up of the japanese tosa inu and was suppose to be the korean equivalent to the japanese fighting dog (Tosa)....cant imagine that thing fighting itself out of a wet paper bag but...that is the claim, lol. (info came from a Tosa specific breed specialist so it may be bias). I am the same way and my vet knows me by voice, lol. never had anything wrong with the filas but i am used to woning other breeds in the past.

Believe it or not, the vet here in CA gives a discount to us for the amount of service we request! THANK YOU GOD!

As for your quotes and postings, I want to reiterate, I like them for their information and perspective. I truly enjoy reading and seeing the information.

The statements about my experience with other breeds and their standards was only to support my ideas and our potentials as Fila owners.

    To answer this, your quote...
"I dont know where you get your info from but just because someone post a piebald up doesnt mean that it fits the CAFIB standard. I don't want to bash anything in particular. I want to always hold myself accountable for what I do. If anyone who bought or re-homed from me, wants to chime in...PLEASE do! I don't remember saying a piebald fits a standard. I'm sorry, did I? Please post standards, it will help everyone I don't remember talking about different breeds making up our Filas, please copy and paste where I said that, I certainly didn't want to question the originations of our breed. As for Itanhandu, I have had my own extensive experience with them. As for 'kennels', is it fair to say each person has in their mind what is 'right' by the standard, and their goals for perfecting health, look and soundness? We, as purchasers, have the ability to buy or not buy from where the deviation in our preference and interpretation comes into play.

As for the paper bag, that is hugely appropriate for a lot of breeds. I agree with you, I personally want, within standard, versatility over size/weight.

    Any information on 'elimination' testing?

    Dianna,

You did not post it. I just write as the thought comes to mind and dont think about the reader sometimes. I was responding to several different posts on that one post. I was responding to post #20 where post Tobe wrote "An organization that rids a dog of their black gene but excepts a piebald is very suspect to me, should we assume these piebalds come from the cross breeding of Saint Bernards or Fox Hounds, or should we reason that centuries ago Blood Hounds were solid in color, both black and white."
Sorry for the confusion, not my intent.
As far as "elimination" are you referring to culling practices?

I'd like to add that from what i understand the black gene (in dogs) is extremly dominant and thus VERY hard to erradicate...what would the purpose serve these farmers to attempt to erradicate this gene from their stock? If the gene was present it would pop up from time to time even if you attempted to breed away from it. Is it not more likely that the gene was never present? Now the white gene is an extremly recessive gene (in dogs). unless breeding purposely for it with some pretty tight line breedings you will not get piebalds, however it may pop up from time to time because as we all know that gene is there. Now i am by no means a geneticist but from time to time I listen to folks that know more than me on a particular subject and was able to get this from it. This discussion was being held for bulldogs but genes are genes and it should not make a diff from breed to breed. one more thing that i have noticed...dogs with alot/all white tend to have some very undesireable issues such as deafness, blindness, allergies and skin issues. sounds like a shallow gene pool issue and I know that CAFIB doesnt like dogs described as "piebalds", this could be for this very reason.

    Brasileirokid,

No, not culling. I had asked in a previous post if anyone was aware of testing products that could be purchased by private parties legally to do fecal and urine tests. I'm sure the spectrum would be limited, but after a UTI event, I am paranoid now. When I owned Basenjis we had urinary strip tests for a genetic protein condition that develops in the breed between 5-7 years. Not the same as UTI, but was wondering if anyone knew of any products.
