    Getting Another... Advice Needed

I've had my wonderful female Fila, Baloo, for almost two years now. I'm seriously considering getting her a playmate. A dog who can really keep up with her antics and can hang out with her when I can't.

I really really really don't need a puppy. I'd love to find a larger adult who is playful and housebroken and work with them until Baloo is comfortable with the new addition. When I told a friend this she completely freaked out "NO! You HAVE to get a puppy! She won't accept anything else!"

What do you think? Have any of you introduced a new, adult dog to your current fila? Positive/Negative experiences? Any thoughts about what I should look for in the new dog? Thanks for any input!

  2. If i were you id be looking for a fixed rescue dog, there should be some out there ,i wouldnt count on em being housebroken but its probally possible.rescued dogs usually recieve a lot of love from the rescuer and they can sometimes offer a lot insider info.good luck

  3. go to the working dog expo and cafib post there are some filas just like what you seek.you have to follow it thru to the rescue section but they have pic as well, some nice looking dogs from what i can tell.

I've re-homed with no troubles at all. It really is up to the ability of the new owner. I am looking to re-home 2 thirteen month males right now. If you have a game plan ahead of time, you'll undoubtedly bond just as lovingly with an older Fila.

  5. Diane - why did you decide to rehome the boys ? They look like real nice youngsters !

it will depend if your fila is dog agressive. mine arent and I can bring any adult dog over with no issues as long as the other dog is non dominant.

I kept from my litter two to decide which I would eventually want for a future program. As a first time breeder I couldn't tell until they were older. I am in a perfect position to keep them though, don't think I am trying to off them. If you'd like I can show you pictures of my home, or ask people who have been here personally if they minded talking to you privately about what they have seen of my home and the two boys. The second male didn't work with the family who bought him, he was one of the top two favorite males. I am processing him through a family for a re-home, but they are renters with landlords who are reticent. They just had a 4 day "let's see" visit, I picked him up from Thursday night. if you want I could have you talk to them directly about their experience. As to their personalities, they have had mass exposure from birth. Extensive exposure to travel, crowds, conformation shows, obedience, crowds of dogs, individual dogs; I would be more than happy to ask all the owners from my past litter to give you private conversations on what their take on me and the puppies are. My web site has full disclosure if you want to see the boys Aries and Aeros.

    Hey Suz,

If I could I would own 15, but right now 6 is good. I had to have Chica relieved from her pains so "Lucky 7" is now "Even 6". With the obedience, conformation achievements, and hip screening done on Savage so well, we'll be breeding him to Juicy and between the accomplishments and health of the two we're hoping to produce some 'better' family members. If it goes like last time, I might hang on to them ALL So two were always meant to find a new home, it just took me a LONG time to get to the point of doing it. Happy new year friend.

  9. I look forward to seeing your litter from Savage - he is a really handsome guy ! I am sure you will find good homes for the boys - especially since you have done so much work with them already . Sorry you guys lost Chica this past year - it is never easy to lose a good dog.

    Happy New Year !
