One of the ways I make sure my dogs are gently with food being fed to them by hand is to, when they are very young, give them food with my fingers fully encasing the food. Some bite at first, sometimes hard, but after a few corrective steps (I would never hit a dog on it's snout) and some praising when do, all my dogs take food out of my hand very, very gently.

That works with snacks but not so good with raw meat. What ive been doing now is put him on the down command an he has to wait to be released before he can take it.I always feed the meat first so its not held up in his system behind the kibble which takes longer to pass an digest.None of my dogs gets baited by food because you cant take it on the field anyway, they work for the tug its way better.Yago always wants more, but then he gets lazy an i cant have that i try to keep him fine tuned, but he is so serious its not funny.

When I do feed raw foods like chicken or whatever else.... even when hand feeding I make my dogs sit and if they try to rush to take the food out my hands I say gentle... and they gently take it out of my hand... I do this often and as well pet them while they're eating just in case my kids ever pet them while eating they won't get bit or even get growled at! I feed my dogs separately to prevent food aggression amongst each other and so they can relax and eat in peace besides me petting them every so often just to let them know whose the pack leader!

filaman73,
Take a look at the link for what we feed our dogs. Just to add to your information database. It works well for us, took us probably 6 to 12 months to perfect. http://www.delalunakennel.com/inform...-what-we-feed/

What we feed our Fila's
The raw diet is amazing. I have many dogs on 100% raw. When I first started the raw diet I to used to fill the bowls with all sorts of things. I think that was to please myself and me being extra careful. Now the diets are simple: Chicken leg quarters, turkey necks, chicken backs, organ meat, ground meat (chicken, beef and pork all ground up together) and frozen veggies. One day they might have leg quarters and organ meat. The next day chicken backs and veggies. I don't make every meal a complete meal as per our human standards. My dogs are doing very well on this type of diet. I do keep a bag of kibble around for the occasional rescue dog and I have a mutt who prefers kibble. Something I have noticed is going from kibble to raw the dogs don't get upset tummies. Also, my raw diet is cheaper or the same price as kibble. You put in a pound of kibble and you get half a pound or better of dog poo. You put in a pound of leg quarters and the dogs only produce a small, clean poo a few onces at most. Those raw poops are easy to clean up compared to the kibble poops. Sometimes if you miss a raw poop pick up most of them turn white and if step on them they turn to dust. Sorry for all the poop talk but I have a lot of dogs and I like to walk my yard without dodging land mines. Keep it simple and this diet works well. If it makes you feel better than make up those bowls with all the stuff in it. I did it but the dogs do very well on simple raw diets.

If you need a suppl for hips or arthritis go to the feed store and check out the horse section for Next Level by Farnam. My last dog that had some clicking noise in his walk was solved in two weeks or less. Good stuff. I have herd that some human suppl are not designed to be digested by animals. That was a new one on me. I am guilty of using human vitamins. Next Level has been very good to me so far and I have no desire to try anything else. This stuff works.

As Kibble goes....Diamond is very good for the price. I have read many brands labels that are not as good as Diamond for double the price. Taste of the Wild is what I would suggest if you want to spend more money. I have to say RAW is the way to go. The dogs digest what you give them with raw. Raw is natural for a dog. Think about a farmer back in the 1940's even and he was not buying expensive kibble for his farm dogs. They got leftovers, raw leftovers.

I have not fed diamond since it had the problems with aflatoxin a few years back - but picked up a bag of the performance formula last month to give it a try again . None of the dogs would touch it, a bowl sat there all day. Not a good sign to me. My last filas loved it. Needless to say I went and picked up a bag of proplan. I have been feeding alot of raw and a small meal of kibble each day. Sully is not a big fan of raw chicken or turkey . He liked pork necks alot. I have been feeding a manufactured raw mix of ground beef, green tripe and bone. He loves that :-) I love what Dianna has on her webpage about making their own food - I wish I lived near someone so dedicated that I could participate in making large batches like that :-)
