What do you use?

We have several acres out in the country. All Fenced with either chain link or wood; all of it 6' high.

In one of our pens, the one that is 'theirs' the male dog has learned how to get out. First it was under...so, I arranged some railroad ties on the outer permiter, all attached to the fence. I also re-inforced each point along the bottom of each gate.


Then he learned how to open the typical yoke style latch, so I put a lock in it.

He learned how to push the lock out and lift the latch. So, I started locking the latch. Then he forced...bent...the yoke.

So, I added a second yoke.

He bent both of them.

This time I added some 1350lb rated chain around. I suppose he will pick the lock next.

Some people assume filas are dumbasses as they view most mastiffs as so. Well they are not. 6 ft is barely adequate. I recommend landscape rocks at the bottom of the fence anywhere they challenge it. I make rounds every day to check the perimeter for digging. You can't take chances with these guys. Few people have seen a 150lb dog jump up a 6' fence, swing their elbows over, and yelp in pain as they pull themselves over the other side, and then land and shake it off with a "smile" on their face. Amazing canines.

Electric can stop digging. I use the heavy duty kennels from Tractor Supply. They run $600 for a 10 x 10 but if you have another kennel or fence you can expand them to 10 x 20 using the same panels, go from square to rectangle with a shared/common wall. The door locks are awsome and the doors won't bend out or in. If they are jumpers put up the kennel covers and zip them down with big ties not the ones provided. I let the dogs dig the holes and I drop in large pavers and cover them back up. Recently I put goat panels inside a kennel at an angle so if the dog wants to dig out they have to go down and then over 3 feet. I could take some pics if you want. On a rare occasion you can get one of these kennels off craigslist. They usually list them as welded wire kennels from Tractor supply. TS has the akc model and it is not as good as the belden/heavy duty model. Well worth the extra bucks for the larger and heavier one. Hope this helps....

Naw, I am pretty happy with the current set up. My guys only go out to the fenced area to poo/pee. Otherwise they are with us when we go to town and in the house except for walks in the desert and yard duty.

BTW, I like those welded kennels and will pick some up for next hunting season. Since we can't / won't put them in a kennel, they go with us and stay with us during the season. It sure is great to see them doing their thing in the outdoors.

But, for the times we have other folks in camp, one of those larger welded kennels will work great.
