I sell trees every year and normally take my family dogs along but this is first year with filas and I am wondering what I should do...I have 2 filas one has hard temp. and the other does not. there are a few days when we have to work constantly and there are many people that come in to buy trees within our fenced lot, I cannot leave the dog at my home in another state and was considering a kennel to board but am not sure if they take in dogs that they cannot touch or let loose (if it would even be advised)....I was leaning towards taking them with me and the hard temp dog during business hours I would have to keep either inside a building onsite or in a 4x6 kennel I can setup outside nearby or I could maybe fit something to my pickup with canopy to enclose the back. I am not looking forward to this since I think the dog will whine or bark being cooped up and with many people coming in I can't let him out. any suggestions? anyone ever have similar problem of what to do with dog due to being around public place for days or weeks (this is about 3 weeks for me)?? I am hoping the dog will just grow weary of whining/barking and lay on his dog bed (and I can walk him 3 or 4 times a day and let him out at night). I could set him up with kennel right by where I can sit, and I could use a bark collar I have from a previous dog?? I did buy a leather muzzle as a back-up but don't think I can just chain him by where I sit. the dog really goes off on strangers and has bit a friend that was dumb enough to not listen to me tell him to stay in his car when driving to my ranch house.

thanks

Well my friend, i had a similar situation, what i did for 2 months!!! was built kinda like a little kennel (looked more like a ranch) i made it big tho, about 8ft x 12ft. In my kennel there was only one dog, so he had more room for himself, just remember you have to clean it alot, so he doesnt step on his own dumpings. Also take him out on walks so that he doesn't become irritated, especially if he is used to being lose all the time. Filas are really loud dogs lol, and they will bark alot, maybe use ply wood to keep him from having a few of all the people might help. the muzzle i wouldnt use since its uncomfortable to use all day long. Also, consider walking him alot. Ah!!! keep some sand in handy, to throw sand ont op of his pee, and even after cleaning the kennel throw in some sand, it will help keep flies away. Well hat's about it i think. in the pickup truck it may not be such a good idea.

Big has the same idea I have. If you live in the states and more specifically in the northern states where it is cold now you dont have to worry about flies. You can try to buy a cheap kennel on the Craigslist of the town you are going to be in..ie, i saw a 10'X10'wire fence kennel for sale in NY Craigslist 3 mths ago for 200 bucks...then keep one piece of plywood up (like big said) to block the view of the dog towards people and lower his/her stress level. the truck thing with the canopy isn't a horrible alternative as long as you can walk the dog every so often so it is not cooped up in there and it is cold outside...you wouldn't want to keep the dog in there if it is hot though.

thanks, no matter what I do it will be a big change of routine from being in country to the city with a stream of people coming in (in california)...it is too cold to kennel him here so it will be a first experience down where it is warm in socal. I will use the 4x6 kennel and will try to block the view of people...I may have to even set it up inside the vacant building there if he is too loud and doesn't adjust to people coming around....I used to take him down to country store and he was OK with people with me sitting next to him unless they stopped to look at him or were closer than about 10 feet of him. if we are in a vehicle and people approach he goes completely nuts and the slobber flies!!! hopefully this experience will make him less reactionary if people are merely walking nearby (he is 9mo. old now)

My male ate part of my wife's truck; to the tune of $6500 damage to the interior. We had just moved in to a new house way out in the country. Wifey was taking the construction guys around our house pointing out things that needed fixed. By the time she circled the house completley, he had ripped both front seats down to the frame, deployed the side airbags, goofed up the steering wheel, tore the head liner ,,,, all this because he wasn't able to do his job and protect her.

I know what you mean. One of my males would like to go thru the glass in our suv to get someone. He acts like a hound of hell when people walk by so I avoid it all together now because he very well might possibly break the glass. Now deploying the airbags, thats funny, after the fact of course and when its not your vehicle.

yeah I hear you on the interior damage and I also worry about window glass.... I have been having some guys come by to work on a barn and they have provided a few laughs when he got out of the house and these guys were slipping and falling down as their feet were moving like road runner's feet trying to run to the climb up the scaffolding!!! I know it shouldn't be funny.

Well, fencing is iffy. Chain link is no problem for a Fila and I know this first hand. They can grab it and pull it off the frame or they will simply break it and squeeze through. All my chain link kennels have welded wire reinforcements, goat panels from tractor supply. Those are my older kennels and you have to make the doors sturdier to becuase the doors on chain link kennels have weak frames and the dogs can push them open enough to get out. Rubber straps, not bungy, pulled tight at three points on the door can work. I currently only buy welded wire kennels and those things have awesome doors and dogs cannot get through them. They are expensive but they work and will last a long time. The cost of a chain link and then the cost to reinforce them ends up being as much or more than a good welded wire kennel. Tractor supply has a good one that is 10x10 and if you can find a wall or building to put it next to you can expand the kennel to 10x20 using the wall as one side of the kennel.

It is amazing how fast people will move with a dog on their arse! LOL LOL LOL Me included.

Oh those windows do make me nervous. I have some dogs that wait for the stranger to get close and then surprise them with barks from hell while making my van wobble and beating on the windows. I can't fault the dogs for doing a good job so keep that in mind. A magnetic sign can be had for cheap these days from a sign shop. A sign saying Stay Back, No Eye Contact, Dog will bite, live animal transport keep away, etc....Might be worth the $25 to have it made if it keeps half the idiots away from your vehicle.

Good luck with the tree sales this year.

Oh yeah, the welded wire kennels will stand by themselves because of the framing. Chain link can only do that if it is 4 panels. If you try and add two panels to make it longer you will need fence post dug into the ground to keep the kennel from collapsing on itself.

That's ok, I thought it was funny. And my male will bulge the lifgate glass and the side/rear windows too. The female is just as protective, but in a different way. She, when I am playing with the male, will often get between us if she thinks he is being too rough.

I have a 6' chain link fence all around the house, including the garage. Sorta makes for a neat security system. I also had a well know alarm company install various sensors in the garage as back up to the dogs.

My Fila's have learned that they can push through the bottom of the man gates. So, I learned to add extra wire ties on the bottom. They haven't figured out their way around that in over 2 years. However, the male unlatches the gate...which is why I put a padlock on the gate.
