I am desperatly seeking to purchase a Fila puppy from a breed loving breeder who has the breeds best interest at heart. I have been up and down the internet and talked with several "breeders" who qualify more as puppy mills or backyard breeders trying to make a buck rather than produce sound, healthy dogs. I am a Cornell certified Canine Behaviorist and have over 30 yrs working with dogs and very familar with the breed. It is my dream for a long time coming to own my own Fila and I want the very best quality puppy -without having to pay an insane amount of $. We want a forever family dog however would love to foster, adopt or offer any training service to help the breed.
Thank you for letting me vent.....:)

Good Morning!
Welcome to the boards. The boards have been pretty dead lately. If you do get any responses. It will probably be to toot the horn for Cafib. I bought a CBKC Fila and recently got a rescue whose sire comes from Cafib lines. I think it is a crap shot either way. I know that there is a couple of breeders in the states that I would stay away from, search parvo on these boards, might give you a good start. As a dog person, your not starting from zero, take your time talk to each breeder. I will say this, IMO, just because they have a champion or any other title attached to their name, doesn't mean a lot. Here is a little story to illustrate my point:
In high school I just had to be in the FFA, you had to have an animal to show at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo(pretty big event). My mom and I didn't know anything about this whole process. So for fifty bucks(this was over 30yrs ago, nice sum of money) I was offered a rare rabbit and guaranteed it would take 1st, 2nd or 3rd. I'll be damned it that rabbit didn't take second place. There were only 3 entered. Not many shows, not many Filas entered. Cafib is a little different but I say whereever money is exchanged, greed can happen and judgments can be skewed.
If you can find it in your heart there are rescues out there. There seems to be one almost every week right now. Some you can even know which breeder it came from and get there pedigree. If you would like to rescue one and save yourself some money I could try to point you in the right direction. By the way, right now I would not pay more than 1k for any pup out there.
Good luck.

THere are some great breeders I have come across with, but I do understand rescuing a fila, or any dog for that matter. Petfinder has great listings as well as ebay classies, and Craigslist for rescue dogs. As for breeders there are a couple here that I would trust. Also try Facebook and network with the breeders there. I hope this helps (:

there is a breeder that recently had a breding and pups should be out within a month or so...good breeding with health checked parents. when the pups are born I can let you know.
I can point you toward two rescues that have multiple Fila's available. I have a Fila rescue and she is a damn good dog. I feel safe with that girl by my side and she is an old gal that had multiple owners. There are two breeders on this forum that are producing some very nice dogs, IMO. Take your time and good luck!

hello iam also in virginia beach.ial do you a favor come over see my dogs an make up your own mine i have a male and female brindle.i wont name names but i can show you some very good dogs with out all the hype i dont breed .i work my dogs and 90 % of the people on the field (people who really work dogs)are impressed the average person could not handle these dogs ,and my filas will bite a dog sleave ,something most wont do.i dont know what type of training you speak of but iam curious,,did i mention they look so sweet(from a distance) that even old ladies want to pet them.mine are very strong willed dogs but then thats exactly what i asked for.ive been pleased enought to purchase 3 from the same breeder the first being in the late 80s to press.ial answer any questions you have an not once will mention where there registered , ial show you why that doesnt matter,in person not on a forum, which is how and the only way these dogs should be purchased .

alpha, well said.. i agree w/ most of it.
dogshrink, there is a cafib show in NC (louisburg) on the 1st of October..come and see some untrained real filas do what they do best. you will get to see real temperament and nervous system that has not been masked with countless hours of conditioning and bite training. You will see evaluations with green dogs and you will be able to talk to the judge ans see what he is looking for and why, all in a friendly laid back environment with responsible fila owners that care about the breed. Remember there is more to the fila than just temperament...i have seen patterdale terriers that will bite a sleeve but that doesnt make them a fila..it is the whole package or it isnt a fila.
