I bought Oscar from a breeder in Colorado, I emailed her in the first week to let her know how he was adjusting, she didn't email me back. I forgot to send in the health check verification, and did not remember until after the biting incident, I went on-line to email the breeder, her domaine is for sale, phone disconnected, no way to reach her to get Oscars papers. I am not planning to show him, but I have considered one breeding before getting him "altered", but I can not do this unless I have his papers. Is there any other way I can get them? The only thing I do know is who is father is....but not his "sire" name. Any suggestions??

Juan, your pups are beautiful.

Oh my other question is how large do the males actually get, some claim to breed for max weight of 220 for males, my guy is 18 months old and only 125, he seems like he is quite large enough.

Hi:)

I just took my Fila in for a bite check up. He is 5 months and 3 weeks old. He is 109 lbs and ought to hit 175-200. My other one is 11 years old and 126, so they can vary. As my older one was growing up I was quite satisfied with his weight..lol...he was hard to handle. Seems the temperament makes up for the weight:)

Hi Gisell
I was just wondering if the breeder you used in Colorado had a historic farm, raised mainly horses, and on her website there were videos of the dogs in the water? If this is the same breeder I might have some info. Thanks.

male filas average about 125-145 in size - you don't often see them over 160 although it happens sometimes
a dog close to 200 is not typical nor something to breed for as that is out of standard ( no there is no " top weight" but to carry that much weight the dog would be too tall )

Hi. Allways one. If you want to see a Fila that is HUGE and around 200 lbs that won Multiple Best in Show at the World Dog Show in 2007 in Mexico City check out this address
http://www.aimkennel.com/AIM_Filas/Fila_Brasileiro_Thor.htm They DO use the F.C.I.Standard and he is HUGE! THOR of AIM..so a large Fila is out of the standard and cannot win a MAJOR event by the F.C.I.? Look at his picture and see for yourself. They are not all this big, but some are and when in good condition and health, and meet and win Best in Show???? This Thor might be a little large and too tall? but he sure is proportioned well and evidently makes the grade for the F.C.I. Champion! I love it too see ones this huge:)

I have seen Thor in person - he is very large and in standard ( and very beautiful) - but he is also not 200 pounds. Have you seen him in person ?
A dog at show weight is usually overweight - so what may be 170 for show weight - the healthy weight is usually 10 pounds less or so

and BTW - best in show at the World show is not what he accomplished - he was best of breed for 2 of the shows that week - but he was not the World Ch. that year ( although I was rooting for him LOL)
I owned a 1/2 brother to Thor myself - also a multi champion.

Gisselle and oscar,

First of thanks for the kind words on my pups, we think so too, lol.

You may have to put the name of the breeder for some to help you out with as the info you provided will have us picking at straws. I feel bad for you as I hear this is happening more and more often.
As far as the weight issue.....@ 125lbs and 18mths he is doing just fine. It all depends on what bloodlines he comes from, CAFIB lines should not produce anything anywhere near 220lbs while I have seen some dogs in the United States from different lines that somehow do. If you were to let us know what bloodlines he came from we could be of more use to you with this question.

Good luck with your search for your baby's pedigree.

Standfirm,

5 mths and over 100lbs???????? that may well be the biggest I have ever seen or heard of.
I just saw the pic of thor on the link you provided...there is no way that dog is 200lbs unless after this pic was taken he put on another 40lbs or so.
The reason Filas really shouldnt get to 200lbs or anywhere near that is because these dogs were used as cattle/farm dogs and hunting dogs and a dog with that amount of weight would have been of little to no use for those purposes. Think about a bull mastiff or English mastiff running for miles in the heat of Brazil, sounds silly right? they wouldnt be able to do it and they didnt exist (somehow they do now.......research anyone?). A dog that size would have been as effective as a chihuahua sized saint Bernard in an avalanche, worthless.

Well Juan, I will post a copy of the Vet's weight if ya need not be in doubt:) and some pics real soon. He is the larger ..est...one I have seen. I hope he slows down a little on the growth, but he will hit 175 assured. Some of the Filas actually guarded the villas, as I am sure ya know, and they would not be useless at 200 lbs. Their proportions, power, higher rear end and turning on a dime, and hunting jaguar does not make them useless at anything..lol...and they sure would not be used/expected to run through the jungle for 2 hours. They would be at their master's side and a constant companion and guardian, as I am sure you are aware of also, doing the job they were best suited at, as most Filas don't like to be away from their master...but I do not need to tell you that. I would use my anology of that of a heavy weight prize fighter. He will be slower than a feather weight but will take any punch, and deliver the knock-out. That fighter just has more bulk, and conditioning to even be able to go the number of rounds he has to. Certainly not useless either. They exist now from a very specialized breeding program. I think that is bad in a way, because it seems to dilute the gene pool and not be helping in that aspect. Just looking at the average generations size in people in our country, or others....each generation sure seems to be getting taller, larger, and changing....even in those usually known to be shorter...but what use mentioning that right? It is just an analogy.

Hi. No I have not seen him in person. I simply e-mailed AIM and asked the weight(and no that was not real recent). "Multiple Best In Show winner, Thor is standing at stud at AIM Kennel."
I posted this part not in the right area a little lower down, so pit it in here where it should of went. What I had typed in my post with his picture is what is quoted. Maybe you assumed what I meant as it seems ya do? Sorry for any confusion I caused by not quoting and just saying what they said. I looked back at what I posted and did not see me refer to him as World Champion...but I did say "F.C.I. Champion" and "Best in Show"...guess I was misleading huh??????? (It seems he was just..."Multiple Best in Show".) Sorrry if ya think so. I will try to type EXACTLY what I mean( and not say AROUND 200..because that could be 180 or possibly 220?). Thanks

hey stand firm,

living true to your name you are, lol. This conversation has been had multiple times and your point and analogy is not new either. I am not meaning to say that is has no credit and it does make sense although only in theory. When you say that humans have been getting taller and such did you mean almost 50% taller and heavier in just 10-20 years? because that is what is happening in our breed. it takes a hell of alot generations and breeding know how to get a 90lb bitch to a 175lb bitch. with your way of thinking I can take a couple of pigmys from the jungle feed them some steaks/potatoes, select only the largest and withing 5 generations i will have the new starting line up for for the NY knicks...not gonna happen.

Now the estate guardian thing... yes, they could have been slightly larger but 5 inches more at the shoulder and a full hundred pounds more than the rest of their breed? c'mon now. hunting Jaguar at that weight would also be impossible (if they did inf act hunt jaguar that is). Jaguar do not just stand there waiting to be pounced on by a hippo, they run, and they run fast and long. why do you think hunting dogs are usually pounds lighter then their show counterparts? will the extra weight help or hinder them in the hunt? Yes hunting jaguar will require a dog of substance but only enough substance that the dog could use effectively and be able to actually catch the animal as well.

I have seen people advertising "Filas" that are 32" at the shoulder and 220lbs..... I mean seriously? I call BULL SH!T. that person may have a dog and it may even have some fila in it but a fila it is not no matter what the pedigree says or what the breeder says it is.

These dogs are athletes not just a statue that waits for the bad guy to fall into it's mouth. There are much bigger dogs out there that can be just as if not more intimidating looking then a fila and the people that are looking for that can go that route. sometimes things are just perfect the way they are, if it aint broke dont fix it. now that is some good anology there.
